Praying with Art: Jesus Lulls a Storm

“Jesus Lulls a Storm” by Jesus Mafa

  • Light a candle to remember Christ’s presence with you.
  • Sit five to fifteen minutes in silent meditation paying close attention to the deep breath.
  • As you sit and breathe, become aware of the painting “Jesus Lulls a Storm”.
  • Imagine being on the boat on this painting.
  • Where do you sit?
  • Who is with you?
  • What feelings arise when the winds begin to rage?
  • Where is Jesus?
  • What do you want to cry out to Jesus?
  • Do you cry out first?  Or someone else?
  • Allow yourself to go within.
  • Notice what fear is arising in you.
  • What is going on in your life right now that raises fear like the raging storm?
  • Hear Jesus say, “Peace!  Be still!”
  • Jesus  will calm the storm within you.  Let Christ do this for you.
  • Notice the feeling in the boat once the wind has stopped.
  • What do you notice?
  • What do you hear?
  • What arises in you?
  • What is God’s message for you?
  • Give thanks to God for this time in prayer and for any new insights you have received.
