Proverbs 22 – A good name

Proverbs 22:1-2, 8-9, 22-23

1A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,
and favor is better than silver or gold.
2The rich and the poor have this in common:
the LORD is the maker of them all.
8Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity,
and the rod of anger will fail.
9Those who are generous are blessed,
for they share their bread with the poor.
22Do not rob the poor because they are poor,
or crush the afflicted at the gate;
23for the LORD pleads their cause
and despoils of life those who despoil them.

  • Light a candle to remember Christ’s presence with you.
  • Sit five to fifteen minutes in silent meditation paying close attention to the deep breath.
  • As you pay attention to the breath, let the names of God come to mind.
  • Inhale one name, exhale anything keeping you from God.
  • Continue this as you recall names and characteristics of God.
  • Feel the freedom in your chest as you open yourself to God.
  • Feel the lightness as you encounter freedom.
  • When you feel as free as you can be today, savor the freedom.
  • Who are the poor you will encounter today?
  • What bread (real or metaphor) do you have to share with the poor?
  • How will you share bread with the poor?
  • What is God’s message for you?
  • Give thanks to God for this time in prayer and for any new insights you have received.
