Lent: Live as Children of the Light – Ephesians 5:8-14

Dadu Shin

Ephesians 5:8-14

8For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light — 9for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true. 10Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. 11Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention what such people do secretly; 13but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,
     “Sleeper, awake!
          Rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

  • Light a candle to remember Christ’s presence with you.
  • Sit five to fifteen minutes in silence bringing your attention to the Breath.
  • Notice Christ inviting you to walk into the Light.
  • Step out of the shadow into the Light.
  • With gentleness, embrace the Fruit of the Spirit the Light has for you.
  • Notice how you are awakened to the freedom to be at peace in the Light.
  • Rest in the Light.
  • Is there a part of you in darkness that yearns to be visible in the Light?
  • When it feels safe and peaceful, let the Light shine on this part of you.
  • With gentleness, embrace the Fruit of the Spirit the Light has for you.
  • You are invited to be a child of the Light.
  • How do you wish to embrace this today?
  • How will you play with others and share your light with them?
  • What is God’s message for you?
  • Give thanks to God for this time in prayer and for any new insights you have received.
  • Share as you feel led in the reply box below.

Rev. Dr. Lil Smith is a trained spiritual director, supervisor, and co-founder of Retreat House Spirituality Center in Richardson, TX.  Upon completion of her spiritual direction training, Lil began Praying the Lectionary in 2011 as a spiritual practice for her morning prayer time.  Instead of reading about someone else’s experience of God, it was important for her to create a prayer practice that would encourage felt sense experience of the Holy emerging from within.  It dawned on her others might enjoy the practice, as well.  So she began to share them on this site.

As you experience the practice of Praying the Lectionary, adopt a loving, caring, and compassionate stance.  If the end of your prayer and meditation time is not pointing to love and hope, there is more work to do.  Keep wrestling.  God is faithful to your journey.  Love and hope will emerge.  Be gentle with yourself and befriend any judgment that arises in you.
