Romans 8:12-17 Live by the Spirit

ROMANS 8:12-17

12So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh — 13for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.14For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ — if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

  • Light a candle to remember Christ’s presence with you.
  • Sit five to fifteen minutes in silent meditation paying close attention to the deep breath.
  • As you inhale, embrace the spirit of adoption.
  • As you exhale, let go of the spirit of slavery.
  • Continue to breathe deeply as you become open and free.
  • As you become free, rest in the arms of Abba! Father!
  • Share any of your suffering with the one who suffered for you.
  • Share any of your joy with the one who made you with joy.
  • Ask Abba how the Spirit will lead you today.
  • Sit and listen.
  • Listen for God’s message for you.

1 John 5:1-6 – Love the children of God

1 JOHN 5:1-6

1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. 2By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, 4for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. 5Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

6This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.

  • Light a candle to remember Christ’s presence with you.
  • Sit five to fifteen minutes in silent meditation paying attention to the deep breath.
  • You are a child of God.  You are beloved.
  • Make a list of the ways God loves you.

Romans 8:12-25 – For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God

Romans 8:12-25

12So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh — 13for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.

18I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. 19For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; 20for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; 23and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

  • Light a candle to remember Christ’s presence with you.
  • Sit five to fifteen minutes in silence bringing your attention to the Breath.
  • Notice hope in you.
  • What hope do you see?
  • Expectant hope.
  • Let your attention go to your body.  Where is your body groaning inwardly?
  • Describe this place of groaning.
  • What unseen hope does this place  in you desire?
  • Invite the unseen hope into the place of groaning.
  • What do you notice?
  • Invite expectant hope to heal this place of groaning.
  • What is your message from God?
  • Give thanks to God for this time in prayer and for any new insights you have received.
